We cannot show you the price

Monday, February 13th, 2006

I love shopping on Amazon.com. I usually find things at good prices, and the super saver shipping makes it even nicer.

But I’m a bit miffed at why a lot of the items don’t show you a price. Instead, they say “Add me to the shopping cart and I’ll show you the price there”. Why?

I just noticed Walmart.com does the same thing for some of their items.

What’s the reason for this? Do they not know the price until you are ready to buy it? Is there someone at the other end trying to guess what I’ll pay for it? What gives?

Free Spins

Saturday, February 11th, 2006

The term “Free Spin” originated on the game show Wheel Of Fortune. They called it a free spin instead of a free turn because of the fact that, in general, on your turn you SPIN the wheel.

But that terminology seems to have stuck in other places. Now instead of free turns, people talk about getting free spins - even in places where the term doesn’t really make sense.

We are watching some old Press Your Luck right now, and they give out spins as turns (as well as free spins). That doesn’t really make any sense - there is no spinning!

Am I missing something?

Old Computers

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

What do you do with old computers?

I have 6 of them sitting here, 4 of them are Dell Dimensions L500 or greater, and the other two are a Pentium 3 Axis Systems and a P3 Midwest Micro. They all still work (as far as I know), but we’ve outgrown them.

The recycle center doesn’t want them, the dump wants $6 to dispose of them, the United Way isn’t interested, and the school corporation doesn’t need them. I don’t mind paying to dispose of them, but surely someone can use these puppies? Perhaps they’re worth something on ebay, but surely not worth my time to list them.
