Out with the old

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

Well, it’s official. We’re moving. We just finalized the papers on the purchase agreement for a new house. Here is a link to a map showing old home (bottom left) and new home (middle) location.

Next steps include: getting poorer, owning TWO houses, and attempting to sell house #1.

Anyone want to buy a house? Or know someone who does? I’ll give ya a commission.

EDIT: For Dooley’s pleasure, I’ve added a green box at the top representing TP’s home, and a purple box in the center bottom representing where I work.

Ruby on Rails 1.1 RC1

Wednesday, March 22nd, 2006

I’ve added RoR 1.1 to portage. The numbering scheme they use upstream is the same as 1.0, except they tack on the SVN release number to the end, which in this case is 4008. Thus, you may be seeing an upgrade coming through portage as rails-1.0.0.4008.

I have slotted this release as 1.1, which means it will exist alongside your existing rails installation. However, your rails applications may want to make use of this new version when you reload them - as such, you may want to tie your existing runnings rails apps to the 1.0 that you’re currently using.

See this page for an explanation on how to lock your rails version.

Also see this page for an overview of some of the options you have to keep rails versions in your actual code base and not rely heavily on the system gems.

Tax Time

Monday, March 20th, 2006

Dear State of Indiana:

I appreciate the fact that you allow me to file online for free, and have done so now for a couple of years. It’s moderately convenient. Granted, I already have the forms ready to go from Turbotax, but I’ll take the 20 minutes to fill out the online form so as to make your lives easier.

However, I tried to file this weekend and learned that your systems were down ALL weekend for “planned server upgrades”.

Now, I appreciate a server upgrade as much as the next techno-nerd, but for Christ’sUNNAMED DIETY’s sake why do you do it in the middle of tax season? I can only imagine that 500,000 other people who tried to file this weekend are just as thrilled as me.

I’m half tempted now to just send the forms in hand written in yellow crayon for this inconvenience.

Sincerely,
IN#205748203-40948589275849

Spam

Saturday, March 18th, 2006

Well, the spammers seem to have figured out my advanced system for comment verification, so look for that to be changing a little bit over the next few days. I’ve already changed the word - we’ll see how long that holds them.

Bus

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

In my early days of riding the school bus, it was driving by Mr. Salmon (pronounced SAWL-MEN) who was a farmer that lived down the road. I suppose the bus driving was supplemental income.

Anyway, there were lots of Salmons that lived on that farm. One of them was Summer.

I was just recalling this in relation to the comments on Stef’s recent post.

I also recall calling her Summer Salmon (SAAH-MEN), like the fish.

And right now saying that name makes me laugh. Summer Salmon.

Sounds tasty.
