A TRUCK, APPEARANTLY STOLEN IN SEYMOUR THIS MORNING, WAS RECOVERED ALONG FRANKLIN STREET IN COLUMBUS. IN ANOTHER INCIDENT BELIEVED TO BE RELATEDÂ…COLUMBUS POLICE RESPONDED TO A REPORT OF A YELLOW PONTIAC GTO STOLEN FROM THE 2200 BLOCK OF WASHINGTON STREET. THE CAR WAS THEN INVOLVED IN A PURSUIT BEFORE IT CRASHED IN A CEMETARY NEAR SEYMOUR. TWO MALE SUSPECTS ARE IN CUSTODY. WEÂ’LL HAVE MORE INFORMATION WHEN IT BECOMES AVAILABLE.
When I talked to the detectives yesterday afternoon they gave me an update on the story with a couple of interesting facts:
They clocked the guys going 121 mph. He said that the police cars simply could not keep up with the GTO in the chase. They lost sight of the car at a few points.
The guys ran through a cemetary, demolishing the car. I saw picture on the detective’s camera, but I’m going to the body shop today to take some for myself. The car looks completely totaled to me. Both airbags deployed and the front right wheel is now located about 2 feet out from side of the car.
I was told that the police dog got to bite both of the suspects since they wouldn’t give themselves up. I asked if they got to use tasers, but he told me that that county’s police dept. doesn’t have them.
When they gave me the stuff back from out of my car, he asked if I was missing anything else. I told him we still had a few sets of keys that were missing. He went out to his car and got an evidence bag that had the remaining keys in it. Those keys were ones they recovered from the pockets of the suspects.
Apparently, and I was unaware of this, the fact that they entered the house to get the keys to the car is a much worse offense (class B felony) vs just taking the car, like say if we had left the keys in it (class C felony ). It seems as though theft from inside of a residence or house of worship is considered a worse crime than theft from the street or even a business. The fact that one of them had a pocket knife on them could also possibly be construed as a deadly weapon, though since it wasn’t brandished I don’t know if they’ll try that or not. If I had run into one of them and they pulled it, it possibly could be trumped up to a class A.
Indiana’s felony penalties are:
Class D felony: Fine up to $10,000 and 6 months-3 years in jail/prison.
Class C felony: Fine up to $10,000 and 2-8 years in jail/prison.
Class B felony: Fine up to $10,000 and 6-20 years in jail/prison.
Class A felony: Fine up to $10,000 and 20-50 years in jail/prison.
They’re facing a ton of charges. The officer told me to expect them to be in jail for a long time. Of course, I’m certain neither of them has any money to pay for any of their damages, so I’ll be curious to see how this plays out with my insurance and my lease of the vehicle. As well, with the cemetary they damaged - who knows what will happen there.
Will they try and sue my insurance company to pay for the damages since my car did it? Will I get full replacement value or actual cash value for my car? If one of them has car insurance, does their insurance pay for any damages? If not, is it covered under my insurance’s “uninsured driver” policy?
Any experts in this area want to weigh in on what’s going to happen?
