Parents
We had a weekend meeting of both of our parents yesterday. Here’s the scoop.
We haven’t seen either of our sets of parents since before we got married. So this was not only a chance to see them, but a chance to get them together to meet for the first time.
Annie’s folks headed down Saturday afternoon - they had a 4 hour drive. If they had come late in the day, I would have just probably piddled around the house, but since they were coming early in the afternoon we needed something to do.
I suggested the riverboat. Her father was quite excited about the prospect.
The boat went well - all of us won some money. I didn’t play all that much, instead just walking around and kind of taking it in. I got everyone a free buffet from my comps, and they all seemed to enjoy it. Her dad bought me a couple of beers. Good tims. I think he made $120 or so, which was just completely thrilling to him.
On Sunday my parents drove over and we met up. Had some lunch at Johnny Carinos and enjoyed the company. We loaded up both of their vehicles with stuff we didn’t want/need anymore. Had some rhubarb cake my mom brought - good tims.
Highlights:
My parents were very nervous about meeting her parents. This is because her dad is a judge, and I suppose they formed an impression that he was some high-fallutin society snob and that they were to be timid in his presence. In all actuality, he’s an bib-overall wearing small town guy who also happens to put people in jail. They calmed down once they met.
One of the reasons for my parents visit was to take back my extra bed that they gave to me many years ago. Annie took measurements of the mattresses and bed frame and sent it to my mom last week. They were going to bring the mini van if it would fit, otherwise they’d have to bring the truck and trailer.
They show up with the truck - no trailer (small Nissan truck, with a cap over the bed). Some kind of miscommunication happened, because clearly the bed was going to be a tight, if at all possible, fit. The van would have worked much mo betta. Each parent blamed the other one for the decision to bring the truck.
Somehow we stuffed the bed into the back of that truck. It was a festivus miracle, no doubt, but it worked. And it’s one less bed I have to deal with anymore.
Also, in mildly related news, I convinced Annie to let me get a new Powerbook laptop. It had a $150 rebate via amazon.com, and since we used the amazon credit card to buy it she gets 3x points back (6000 points!), which now means 50 amazon.com dollars + 1000 points. Score for me, and score for her.
