Per a recent JCTMH blog, and comment, I believe I must state the unsaid rule of grocery buying:

If you are checking out at the grocery store and no bagger is available to help you, you should bag the groceries yourself. This is a courtesy to the people behind you. If you insist on just standing there and twiddling your thumbs simply because it’s not you job to bag groceries, then don’t shop at that store.

There are some caveats to this rule. First, if you’re at a place where the cashier bags as they go, like some of the Waltarks, then you don’t have to worry about it. Also, if you have < 5 items, it’s no big deal since the cashier can usually bag them quickly.

You don’t have to do the bagging yourself, but if you’re in front of me and you’re wasting my time by not doing it, expect a pissed off celeb to fart in your general direction and ask god that night during prayer time to make sure you die a horrible death.

Your call, really.

(ps. This is the year 2004; soon to be 2005. Miraculously, some new technology called a “check card” exists which really obsoletes written checks for everything except paying bills. You should look into it, oh “person in front of me who still writes checks at the grocery store and refuses to bag their own groceries”. Using one speeds up the process for everyone. It also prevents me from flinging my own feces on your car in the parking lot.)
