Bionic Commando

I don’t know if you ever played the NES game, “Bionic Commando”, but that was a fun fun game.

I won’t go into the details, but I remember renting that game when I was younger and man was it a blast.

I also remember something that really pissed me off about it. You progressed in levels and whatnot and got more equipment that you had to use in the later levels. You would get different communicators, different guns, etc that you could choose one of before you entered a mission.

Well, after many hours of playing I finally got myself to level 6 or something like that, and I started the level.

You’d walk about 3 steps and there was this big ass wall. There was absolutely no way to get past it. There also was absolutely no way to exit the level. You couldn’t even “kill yourself” from this vantage point. The only recourse I had was to reset the machine. Since you didn’t “save” your data, like in the Zelda games, you had to completely start over.

The “trick” was that you had to take the correct “gun” into the level to shoot the wall open. But you didn’t necessarily know that ahead of time, unless you happened to just know that. I bet a lot of people had to reset the game at that point.

That really pissed me off.

Then, many years later, after Al Gore invented the “internet” I found out that if you did some trickery with the controller (or maybe it was the 2st controller) you could magically leave the level and go back to the map. Man that would have been handy.

I remember the exact level you are tarkign aboot. Thankfully, I had a copy of Nintendo Power handy and knew the level-exit trick (start+A+B).

That game rocked. I have very fond memories of it. I wish I had a bionic arm.

The game told you you needed a bazooka for level 6. GOSH!

The end boss was Adolf Hitler, which made absolutely no sense, as your mission was to inflitrate the enemy line and rescue Super Joe (from the original Commando game).
