New York City #3
Since Caleb hasn’t blogged a blog about our Sunday adventures, I thought I would.
One of the things I wanted to do while I was in New York was run in Central Park. It turned out there was a 4 mile race in the Park on Sunday so I signed up. Unfortunately, when we woke up on Sunday it was a little rainy. This was less then optimal but the rain wasn’t too bad, at least at this point. Caleb and I decided to grab a bagel at a deli about two minutes from our hotel. The only reason I mention the bagel is it had about half a container of cream cheese on it; we ending up scraping most of the cream cheese off the bagel and threw it away.
After waiting in the lobby of the hotel for a few minutes to see if anyone wanted to join us, no one showed up, so Caleb and I took off for the park. We decided to catch the Subway. When we got off the subway it was raining harder. Yuck. After waiting about 20 minutes in the park, Caleb took off in search for a bit of shelter, there was none in the park. The race was OK, it was pretty; but the course was hillier than I expected, there was also a pretty steady rain through out the entire race. But I was happy with my finish time, 32:57 - an 8:13 mile and headed. After finding Caleb, caught the subway back to the hotel. Unfortunately, we had a few blocks walk from the subway to the hotel and Caleb was completely drenched by the time we got back to the hotel.
After drying off, packing up, and drying Caleb’s shoes with a hair dryer we went out in search of lunch. We opted for Virgil’s, a BBQ joint, close to our hotel. We got a plate of hush puppies, about 50, very tasty, in addition to our lunches.
The rain slowed down a bit so Caleb and I decided to walk to Grand Central Station. The rest of our group mentioned heading to Grand Central Station since it was raining. Turns out the rest of the group went to Macy’s. We met up at the hotel and decided to head to the Brooklyn Bridge. We ended up walking across the bridge; it was pretty neat.
The from Brooklyn we hopped the subway and headed to Steinway Hall. Steinway Hall is the show room for Steinway pianos. One of the Steinways was $100,000! Caleb and I won’t be in the market for a Steinway anytime soon but it was a neat place to visit.
We hoped the Subway to Times Square and headed back to the hotel. Before reaching the hotel, Caleb bought a hotdog from a street vendor. One of the co-workers bought a $58 cheesecake she wanted to take back to her husband.
We had about an hour before we had to catch our ride back to the airport. I’m not quite sure what the occasion was but there was a street fair on 45th Street. So the group did a bit of shopping, grabbed some food from the street vendors, Anne got her fortune told for $5 bucks. We were to far away to hear the fortune but the best part was when Anne jumped up and said that’s enough!
The driver to the airport was much better than Ben Cash Credit. She did an excellent job or weaving in and out of traffic and managed to get us to the airport in plenty of time. After we made it thru security, we waited in the food court for over an hour before we headed down to wait by the gate.
Unfortunately our plane was delayed due to a bit of bad weather but we made it out about 90 minutes late. The worst part of the flight was the rearranging of some passengers. The kicking two year old wasn’t originial behind Caleb, they were two rows behind - the row in front of the emergency row exit seats. Due to regulations, they moved the whole family up a row. The most annoying part of the game of musical chairs was that the flight attendants had to make the change as the plane was beginning to taxi to the runway.
By the time we made it back to the house it was about 1:30.
Good trip, good time, I got to do a ton of stuff I wouldn’t have done otherwise, and I even left the city with a better opinion (I’d been before twice). However, I don’t think I’ll ever go back.
