Grandma

My grandma called last night. My grandparents live in Mexico during the winter, and have never called me from there before. I thought perhaps there was a problem…

The conversation went something like this:

G: This is Grandma
C: Hi Grandma
G: How are you?
C: Oh, fine. How are you?
G: Okay - What’s the weather like
C: There’s a lot of water around here.
G: Huh?
C: Lots of flooding today
G: You say lots of flooding?
C: Yes
G: How’s the river look in Terre Haute?
C: I don’t know
G: Have you talked to your mom?
C: No, not since Christmas (note: my parents left on vacation Christmas evening, and I didn’t know when they were supposed to be back)
G: They’re supposed to get back in sometime tonight
C: Oh, I didn’t know that
G: If you talk to your mom, will you have her call me - or if she doesn’t have the number then as soon as they get home have her call me?
C: Is there a problem?
G: No, I just need her to get some information to Sam (I dunno who that is), and I want her to have him bring me a piece of mail when he comes down
C: Okay, I’ll tell her
G: How are you?
C: I’m fine - just trying to survive this flood
G: How’s the weather?
C: Well, it’s been a bit rainy
G: Been pretty nice here. We don’t get the Chicago station or the Louisville stations anymore on the TV so we have a hard time keeping up with the weather.
C: Oh, that’s too bad
G: Okay, well, bye
C: Okay, bye

It made me chuckle. My grandparents only concern, ever, when calling us is what the weather is like. Christmas day, my mom called down, and the first thing grandma asked me was what the weather in Columbus had been like over the past few days. Then she asked me how Annie was. Then she made sure to ask if I was still “working hard”. Strange.

My grandfather never talks on the phone - mostly because it’s too complicated for him to use. Instead, he narrates to my grandmother what he wants her to say or ask - all while she’s trying to carry on a conversation of her own. It’s mild hilarity, to say the least.

i don’t want to get old, because when i do, i’m sure i’ll forget completely how to do anything on my own or learn anything new. at least that’s what i’ve observed in other old people.
