More Home Improvements
Caleb and I spent most of our weekend working around the house. Our goal was to finish the downstairs half bathroom. But the goal went unreached.
Before I begin the remodel recap, let me give a bit of background. The bathroom was ugly. Ugly wallpaper, ugly sea green plastic tile. The floor was in shady shape and was unlevel. We’d been working on prepping the bathroom for the remodel for a couple of weeks while trying to keep it operational since it contained toilet 2 (out of 2).
So on Saturday morning we started the day off with a trip to Lowe’s right after we stuffed ourselves with breakfast at the Golden Corral. The 1.5 hour trip got us the majority of the bathroom supplies and a few goodies for Caleb; a DeWalt 12V cordless drill, a sawzall, and a 24′ extension ladder.
Once home, Caleb and I got started working on the bathroom. We sanded, patched drywall, and Caleb did some electrical work. After working for a while we took a break and headed to Menard’s to pick up a few more thinks that we needed. Plus, we wanted to grab a few things from the old house while we were on that side of town.
After our second trip, we worked some more on the bathroom when Caleb discovered he needed a different outlet so he headed to Ace to pick up the outlet while I stayed behind to keep working. Did I mention that ripping tile off the wall sucks?
The last thing Caleb and I did before we called it a day was to rip up the flooring. Unfortunately we discovered a problem. There was a layer of think particle board on top of the sub floor and part of this board was rotted. Caleb and I theorize that the rottenness was due to the toilet being unsealed and leaking - inspector discovered this during the inspection and the seller fixed this before we moved in. It appears that the sub floor is in good shape, though. But Caleb and I quickly decided that we needed to have someone with a little expertise take a look at the sub floor.
We called it a day but not before making one last trip quick trip to Ace so Caleb could finish up the electrical work in the morning.
Caleb did a bit of work on the bathroom on Sunday but we didn’t paint. Caleb had patched some drywall on Sunday morning and it took all day for it to dry. Instead, Caleb and I worked outside. Caleb cleaned the front gutter. We also pulled a lot of weeds.
PS. Here’s a good picture of Caleb working on the bathroom.
