Racial Profiling?
On Saturday, the wife, the MIL/FIL combo, and I went up to Indy to watch the Indians game.
We had been planning this outing for some time. We preceeded the stop with a trip to the Oaken Barrel for a beer sampler and some appetizers.
Saturday morning, while watching the news, I learned that the Indiana Black Expo was also going on this weekend. I have not been to this event before nor have I been in Indianapolis when it was going on, but the “drop-off” zone was at the intersection where the ball park is located. This sounded like it may make for a crowded time.
Sure enough, it was extremely crowded. Probably not much more crowded than your normal downtown convention, but there was a HUGE mass of younger people (think 18-24) all just congregating outside of every possible establishment you could think of. Masses of folks just sitting down on the sidewalks or curbs and talking. 95% were on cell phones. It was pandemonium.
We circled around for a while trying to find a place to park, but most garages were already full. We ended up going all the way past the zoo and coming back into town on the other side of the ballpark to park in the lot right next to it. Turns out, that’s for handicapped parking only.
We ended up trying to get into the State parking garage, which is the normal place to park for a ball game. We thought it was full, but it wasn’t. However, we weren’t in the lane to be able to pull into it so we can to make a big circle around the RCA dome and try it again. It took a while to merge into the proper lane, but we finally got into the garage to park.
However, this is what surprised me the most. There was a sign that said “$10″ parking outside of all of the entraces to the garage. We pull up, and the lady say “$10 please”.
Annie hands her a $20, and she looks us over real good. Then she says: “Are you going to the Black Expo or the Ball Game?”.
I’m sure it was pretty apparent we were going to the ball game just based on a quick look over of us. Annie says: “Ball game”.
To which she replies: “Oh, okay. That will be only $4 then.”
Wowza. Who would have thought?

That sounds barely legal.

I guess it’s OK if the profiling works in your favor, right!?!
Seriously, I think the city is trying to earn extra money from the convention-center events. Although it doesn’t make sense that it’s *THAT* blatant.

assuming they aren’t racist bastards, maybe they charge $10 if you’re going to the convention center, and $4 if you’re not.
or maybe they hat blacks…who knows
