You are what you eat

I think you can tell a lot about a person by what they order at a diner. When I go out to eat, I’m all about variety.

There’s a little diner nearby work that I go to every so often. They have a million choices: chicken and noodles, fried fish, tenderloins, burgers, turkey, roast beef. If you can imagine some kind of lunch item you could order at a diner, they serve it.

They also have 40 or so side dishes to choose from. Most meals come with 2 side dishes, though you can get a 3rd for 30 more cents.

And almost all meals come with either a piece of cornbread or a biscuit.

And don’t get me started on the fact that they serve breakfast all day.

With so many choices, I’m always trying something different. But it’s interesting to watch the “locals” come in. The people who are there just about every day. They all always seem to order the exact same thing. Everyday.

Last week, I witnessed a old man and lady come in and sit down. The lady knew what they wanted without even asking. What they (both) got: a fried chicken patty sandwich. But here’s the kicker: it had nothing on it. It was two pieces of bun with a chicken patty in the middle. That’s it. Nothing else. No sides, even. And each of them spent their 20 minutes eating away at their little lunch sandwiches.

I don’t get it man. When I go to places like that, I want something more than what I could have microwaved in my own house.

Or take the VK - a similar diner like place in Angola. When we visit the inlaws, the wife and I usually stop in for breakfast. I generally order the Special X, which is 2 eggs, 4 sausages, 3 french toasts, wheat toast, and hash browns. For $4.95.

I’m always amused at the people who come in and order ala carte. “I’ll have a cup of coffee, 3 eggs over hard and two pieces of dry wheat toast”.

Cmon man. You could have saved 30 cents by ordering combo #4 off the menu.

It just seems so boring to me. Eating the same thing over and over again. I’m guilty of doing it sometimes: at Qdoba, I always get the chicken quesadilla, for example. But I go to Qdoba a handful of a times a year. Places I tend to go much more regularly, I always try and mix it up and keep it fresh.

Thoughts on boring eaters?

I always get a pepper cheese tweety, loaded when I go to charlie’s.

Back in teh haute we used to go to a diner out towards seeleyville onest a week for lunch. I almost always ordered one of teh specials, which was almost always something different.

In all, I don’t care what other people order, as long as they are ready to order when the waiter axes them.

I guess I am one of the boring types. Usually after I find something I like at a restaurant, I order it over and over till death do us part.
