Trip Report: Charleston and Savannah

Teh wife and I took a few days off from teh Columbus area to visit the above mentioned towns.

We left Friday night around 5pm and headed south. Around 9:00 or so we arrived in Corbin Kentucky, the Colonel Sanders and Kentucky Fried Chicken. We didn’t see him, or his chicken. Instead we stayed at the Fairfield Inn in preparation for the next day of driving.

Saturday morning, up and oat. Long day of driving and we got into Charleston around 4pm or so. We venture to the harbor area where our hotel (Courtyard) is. Go to check in, and lo and behold they don’t have our information. We give them the confirmation number, and it turns out we’re booked at a different Courtyard..one about 15 miles back north that we had already passed. Back on the road, and we get ther and check in. Then we decide to venture to the historic downtown Charleston area. Here are some pictures for your looking pleasure.

Me being me:

We ate dinner that night at a brewery. Around 8 or so we packed up and went back to the hotel. We were both tired from being in the car all day.

The next morning around 8 we headed out for more adventure. We decided to start the day at Patriot’s Point, which is a harbor that has retired WWII ships you can tour. This was by far the most awesome part of the trip. Some highlights:

USS Yorktown:

We also toured the other ships in the harbor. The USS Laffey destroyer, the USS Clamagore submarine, and a coast guard ship which I cannot remember the name of right now.

After this, we headed back over to historic downtown Charleston and met up Dana, a friend of mine I used to work with. We ate lunch and walked around.

We went back to the hotel around 5pm or so, tired. We headed out over to a Sticky Fingers somewhat nearby for dinner.

Next morning, up early and off to Savannah GA.

First stop, Tybee Island. Stopped in to see Fort Pulaski.

Headed to downtown Tybee and had lunch at Spankys.

Wind was too strong and it just wasn’t warm enough to play in the ocean, but we at least went and saw it.

Headed on over to Savannah and walked around. Lots of squares in the town to see. Walked by Paula Deen’s restaurant, but the line stretched the entire block to get in, so we didn’t bother.

Instead we just walked around and took in all of the beautiful surroundings.

Headed over to the Pirate House for dinner. It’s a haunted place where pirates used to eat. Now they serve real people food. We were hungry, and the portions were huge.

Next morning up and start heading for home. Bye Savannah.

Since we had two days to come back and we left Savannah a little earlier than we originalyl thought, we detoured and came back through the Smoky Mountain National Park.

Had dinner at an O’Charleys in Pidgeon Forge (home of Dolly Parton). Stayed at a Fairfield Inn near the interstate.

Wednesday morning up and drove home. Got home Wednesday afternoon about 3pm. We were having the duct work cleaned and the asebestos tape removed from our duct work while we were gone. Got home and it was all done. NICE.

All in all, it was a fun trip. Both Charleston and Savannah are beautiful places to see. I don’t know if I would need to go again for any reason. Charleston especially reminded me of Broadripple, except that it’s about 300 years older. But other than restaurants, bars, and some night clubs, the only other things to do are tours of homes. Fun for a while, but 3 days of seeing that stuff was good enough for me.

Glad to be home. Looking forward to the next trip…to…?

Looks like a great trip. I used to visit Charleston a couple times a month for work years ago. Good times! I agree with your Broad Ripple comparison. And be glad that you weren’t there during a heavy rain - the place floods pretty badly…

Is Annie shrinking? She appears smaller (lighter) than before…

Not that she didn’t appear completely healthy the last times I had seen her… (Going to get in trouble now - must remeber to never broach this topic. It never ends well.)

no worries, mark. :) i think it’s awesome that you think i look smaller/lighter. i can’t believe you were able to notice from those pictures. and yes i probably am a bit smaller since i last say you. speaking of which, it’s been way to long since we’ve gotten together.

…i guess this means i should quit asking caleb if i’m fat.
